I guess one of the hardest things to do as a manager is to coach or mentor a difficult employee that you feel will never change and you have been resisting putting them in the traffic!
I think it’s important that you as a manger have undertaken the 9 steps below while taking a fair witness stance before one pulls the trigger so to speak.
1.Listen
There may be more to the problems that you know.
2.Give clear behavioural feedback
Don’t beat around the bush, straight and hard
3.Document
Write down the key points and and the key actions agreed upon.
4.Be consistent
If you’re not OK with a certain behaviour don’t be OK sometimes with others.
5.Set consequences
If things don’t change make sure there are clear ramifications.
6.Always work with company process
Make sure you dot all the I’s and cross all the HR T’s.
7.Don’t poison the well
Not good to talk about other staff problems with other staff! Just don’t do it!
8.Manage your self talk
keep a fair witness stance and don’t self talk negative or positive thoughts.
9.Be courageous
There is no right or wrong, if they turn themselves around, pat yourself on the back and move on, if they don’t you’re right to say you’ve tried and now it’s time to be courageous!
